Happy New Year

Today is a day for reviewing the year if you judge by what is on social media.  I thought I’d compile a few of my favorite photos of the year.

I began the new year in China.  New Year’s Eve, my son and I viewed the fireworks in Hong Kong and the next morning we boarded a train to Guangzhou.  This was my first trip to Asia and it was a remarkable experience.

My first image is a detail shot of the Chen Family Temple in Guangzhou.

Our second day of travel we visited Kaiping Diaolou, a heritage site a short trip from Guangzhou.  It is hard to explain the meaning and intent of this collection of watchtowers intended to protect wealthy families from bandits.  Constructed largely of cement and reflecting foreign Chinese families maintaining ties to the home country, they are a mix of western and Chinese architecture that is quite striking.  I could have spent days exploring the region but sadly we only had a few hours.

I just realized that compiling my year’s greatest hits is more than one blog post can encompass.  More from China tomorrow, I guess.
